Myopia Management
Nearsightedness, or myopia, is becoming increasingly common among children today. Myopia happens when the eyeball grows too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light rays to focus in front of the retina instead of on it. This results in blurry distance vision while close-up objects remain clear.
It is important to address myopia early on to prevent it from worsening over time and causing more serious eye issues later in life. While glasses or contact lenses can correct this issue temporarily, they won’t slow the progression of this condition. At our eye care centers, we offer specialized treatments such as orthokeratology (ortho-k) and multifocal contact lenses that have been shown to slow down the progression of myopia in children and adolescents.
What are the treatment options for myopia?
At Pleasant Optics in Mt. Pleasant, St. Louis Optics in St. Louis, Carson City Optics in Carson City, and Alma Optics and State Street Optics in Alma, Michigan, our eye doctors specialize in diagnosing and treating myopia in children and adolescents. If we detect myopia during an eye exam, we will develop a myopia management plan that meets your child’s specific needs. This might involve prescribing eyeglasses or contact lenses or recommending atropine drops.
Ortho-k contact lenses
One of the options we offer for myopia management is orthokeratology (ortho-k) contact lenses. These special lenses are worn overnight and gently reshape the cornea while your child sleeps, providing clear vision during the day without glasses or regular contact lenses. Studies have shown that ortho-k lenses can effectively slow down the progression of myopia in children.
Multifocal contact lenses & glasses
We also provide multifocal glasses and contact lenses for children with myopia. These specialized lenses not only correct your child’s vision but also help slow down the progression of nearsightedness. They reduce the strain on your child’s eyes by allowing their eyes to focus more easily at different distances.
Atropine eye drops
We may also recommend atropine eye drops as part of your child’s treatment plan. Atropine works by dilating the pupil and temporarily relaxing the muscles that control focusing. This can help slow down the progression of myopia and reduce the risk of developing high levels of nearsightedness later in life. Our experienced team will carefully monitor your child’s progress while using atropine eye drops and make any necessary adjustments to ensure optimal results.

I have gone here for eye exams both for myself and now my two young boys, and every appointment has been a positive experience. Dr. Alda is kind and warm. All the staff have been really great with kids. The selection of glasses is extensive and there are many price points, so there’s something for everyone. My son picked out two pairs of glasses and can’t wait to wear them! I would recommend this office to anyone. Thank you, Pleasant Optics!
