Age-related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration is a progressive eye disease that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision. As we age, changes in the macula can lead to blurry or distorted vision, making it difficult to read, drive, or recognize faces. Our experienced optometrists use advanced diagnostic techniques to identify signs of AMD during comprehensive eye exams, often before you notice symptoms. While there is no cure for age-related macular degeneration, detecting and treating it early can help reduce or even prevent vision loss.

Treatment for age-related macular degeneration

During your eye exam, our optometrists will perform a series of tests to diagnose age-related macular degeneration. These tests may include a dilated eye exam, retinal imaging, and visual acuity testing. Once a diagnosis has been made, our team will work closely with you to develop a personalized treatment plan based on the type and severity of AMD you have.

For dry AMD, which is more common and less severe than wet AMD, we may recommend lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet high in antioxidants and taking nutritional supplements like vitamins C and E. Regular eye exams are crucial for monitoring dry AMD and preventing it from advancing into more serious stages. For wet AMD, treatment may include prescription medications like anti-VEGF injections or laser therapy to target abnormal blood vessels in the retina. Our team will discuss all available options with you and help you make an informed decision about your care.

Everyone was friendly and helpful. My experience there was very good and I left feeling that my eye care needs were very much taken care of .

I’ve been going to Pleasant Optics in Mt. Pleasant since we moved into the area, and I won’t go anywhere else for my vision care. Everyone, from the front desk staff, the technicians and physicians are all so friendly. They take their time to explain what they’re doing and why, from beginning to end. The office is bright and comfortable and clean. I’d recommend Pleasant Optics to anyone looking for an eye care provider.
